Desktop Declutter 101: Tips for a Cleaner Computer

If your computer screen doesn’t match the neat, minimalist look of the desk it sits on… it might be time for a desktop declutter!

Miscellaneous files and out-of-place folders don’t have to get in the way of a smooth, streamlined digital experience. Take a look at today’s blog as we share five of our best tips for a cleaner desktop.

Create new folders

At the start of your decluttering process, you’ll probably feel the need to delete as many files as possible. And you might end up doing just that! But before you do, create new folders and line them on the side of the screen. Don’t worry about mastering your organization system just yet—simply create basic destinations like “pictures” or “tax info” to use along the way, leaving room for more concrete names later on. By setting up a few folders at the start of the process, you’ll have an easy place to sort out each file you open (just like you would clear out a physical space for piles as you clean out your closet!).

Say goodbye to nonessential files

Like we mentioned, you’re probably going to end up deleting a few files that you no longer need. First, make sure that they really are nonessential (like photo duplicates, or PDF forms you no longer need). From there, you can either delete them or move them to a temporary folder for sorting out later. The idea of a digital “junk drawer” may seem counterintuitive, but it’s always a handy alternative for files you’re not quite sure what to do with but don’t necessarily want to part with just yet.

Set a backdrop you love

While it may seem simple, choosing the right background for your computer can make all the difference! You’ll probably be less likely to cover up a stock background image with errant files and folders than you would a happy family photo or landscape shot you love.

Make important folders accessible

Of course, don’t feel the need to keep an entirely bare backdrop. Feel free to keep important folders and shortcuts accessible, lined up neatly in the corner of your desktop. This will make it easier to navigate your computer and get where you’re going, faster.

Download smarter

One of the easiest ways to clutter up a desktop is to download your files there. The next time you download a file, choose the right folder when you’re prompted. You can either have it go straight to “downloads,” or select an even more specific spot (photos, work docs, whatever it may be!). This will ensure that your desktop—the portal to your digital life—stays neat, clean, and always well-maintained.

We hope that these tips help you get started on an improved digital experience! As your go-to IT team, Vann Data will be there for decluttering, cloud storage solutions, and anything else you might need along the way.
